Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

What is EFT?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a proven way to help couples heal and grow together. Studies show EFT couples therapy works better than other types of couples therapy. EFT helps you feel safe and connected with your partner again.

How EFT Sees Relationship Problems

When we can’t connect with our partner, our brain goes into stress mode. This is natural – we were designed for connection!

Ever wonder: “Why does the person I love most easily upset me?”

It’s actually because they matter so much to you! When we feel disconnected from someone important, our heart hurts. We then try to protect ourselves in ways that often make things worse:

  • Some of us shut down and go quiet
  • Others get angry and raise our voices
  • Many focus on small problems instead of sharing deeper feelings

These patterns create cycles where conversations turn into arguments that never get resolved. You both end up feeling misunderstood and alone.

Are you caught in an unhealthy cycle? Let's break free.

How EFT Couples Therapy Works and Who It Helps

EFT helps you:

  • See the cycle that traps you and your partner
  • Understand how this pattern started
  • Learn new ways to share your true feelings safely
  • Rebuild trust and connection
  • Create a relationship where both people feel valued

You don’t have to keep people-pleasing or walking on eggshells. EFT couples therapy helps you find your voice while staying connected.

I love helping couples who’ve lost their spark and feel more like roommates than lovers. If you can’t have a conversation without it turning into an argument, I’m here for you. Many couples I work with are overwhelmed by parenting young children or trapped in endless discussions about soccer schedules and carpools rather than connecting as partners.  Whether you’re seeking traditional couples counseling or faith-based support, I’m here to help.

My Approach

The first step is identifying EXACTLY what your disconnect looks like. Do you shut down when things get hard? Turn away from your partner? Get frustrated and pick fights just to get some reaction?

I often say, “We can’t fix a problem until we know what it is.”

My job is to help slow you down to see what’s really happening instead of letting your arguments race ahead at 100 miles per hour. Together, we’ll uncover those hidden feelings:

  • That loneliness when your partner’s face goes blank
  • The flash of anger when they push that ONE button they know will upset you

I help you slow down, understand what’s actually happening, and clear away the distractions. Once you see your patterns clearly, we practice sharing these feelings with your partner and taking brave steps toward vulnerability. Eventually, you’ll recognize your cycle and stop it yourselves outside our sessions.

Why EFT Works When Other Approaches Haven’t

EFT couples therapy reaches the heart of what’s actually happening in your body and emotions. When we’re in fight-or-flight mode, we can’t access the logical part of our brain to use communication skills. Our emotions blind us, even if we don’t realize it.

I’ve watched couples transform how they interact so they actually feel like lovers again, develop deeper emotional intimacy, and enjoy a better physical connection too.

The Gottman method works wonderfully for couples with a secure bond already. But if you’re stuck in the same hurtful pattern over and over, you probably won’t think your way out. This is where EFT couples therapy truly shines.

What You Can Expect

Short-term: You’ll learn more about yourself, why you react the way you do, and develop self-compassion. Long-term: You’ll connect vulnerably with your partner, build empathy for each other, and learn to catch and support each other in moments of distress.

About Me & How I Work

I earned my master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2015. I’ve always been drawn to helping couples strengthen their relationships.

My EFT journey began during an intensive two-week graduate course. After getting my feet wet in the field and earning my licensure hours, I took my EFT couples therapy training to the next level during the pandemic. In 2020, I completed an EFT externship—a four day experience diving deep into the model and its practice.

I continued my education with Core Skills training in 2023, which involved four two-day intensive workshops spread across a year. I regularly meet with an EFT supervisor for consultation to keep improving my skills, and I’m currently working toward full certification.

What makes my approach special is that I’ve experienced EFT firsthand with my husband in our own counseling. It transformed our relationship in amazing ways! This personal experience fuels my passion for helping other couples rebuild their connection—creating stronger relationships and healthier families.

How Sessions Work

The first session, I will meet with both of you together to understand more about your relationship and what is going on. Then I will meet with each of you individually one time. These meetings help me understand you both as individuals and learn about your family backgrounds and experiences.

A few important things to know:

  • Whatever we discuss in those individual sessions can be brought up in our couples work
  • I don’t keep secrets from either partner
  • After these first two sessions, we’ll almost always meet together
  • I focus on improving your bond as a couple rather than teaching one person skills

Our fourth session we will be back together, and from then on all of our work in session will be done with all three of us present. I believe in working with both of you together to create lasting change in your relationship.
